"Excellent standard of care delivered sensitively"

About: The Princess Royal Hospital (Telford)

I wanted a homebirth with as little intervention as possible. My wishes went against advice which resulted in me having a meeting with consultants and midwives to ensure that I was making informed decisions. I appreciate everyone making time to discuss through the issues with me and subsequently making arrangements to ensure I had the best chance of fulfilling my wishes as well as being given my prescription for pethidine to store in case I felt I needed it during a homebirth.

However, my baby had other ideas! Due to my waters breaking and not going into labour properly I had to be induced and have a hospital birth. Although this was everything I did not want, it was still a very positive birth experience. I cannot thank the midwives and consultant enough for providing such a high level of care.

Due to complications an assisted delivery (forceps) was required. The team did everything they could to involve me and my partner in the decision making process which meant I never felt out of control. Great care was taken to include my birth plan and give consideration to my wishes which I really appreciated.

The after care was also very good. The team did all they could to get me home as soon as sensibly possible (which was a particular wish of mine) and I am very grateful to all the staff who played a part in looking after us so well.

This was my third baby and I have become accustomed to having to strongly advocate for myself all the way through the use of maternity services. If there was anything I would suggest to improve the service it would be to find a way to work with mothers to decide the best route of care together rather than telling them what they are and aren't "allowed". This narrative is a nationwide problem. It would be wonderful to see Shropshire lead the way in correcting and revolutionising this for women everywhere.

Many thanks for helping me bring my precious daughter into this world and looking after us so well.

Good afternoon

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I am so pleased to hear how well you were treated and how impressed you were with the care given. Receiving feedback is very important to us and it means a lot to the staff so I will ensure your kind comments are passed on to the relevant department managers.

Kind Regards
