"Alive today and so grateful"

About: Douglas Street Community Health Clinic NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) University Hospital Wishaw / Adult Critical Care Unit (ACCU) University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department University Hospital Wishaw / Radiology

(as the patient),

I became unwell and breathless after finishing work on a Friday.   I wasn't sure what was wrong with me, so I consulted my sister who is a staff nurse in another Hospital. On the following Sunday, instead of having a romantic meal with my husband I was telephoning NHS 111. After the advice given I was advised to go to out of hours 24 service in Hamilton for an assessment and to pack a bag. I never got time to pack tbh as a Doctor from Hamilton had been looking at my details and immediately advised I need an ambulance, I refused as felt well enough to get my husband to take me to A& E.

On arrival it all happened so quickly from there from getting a Covid-19 test, BP, bloods taken, Oxygen levels etc. After waiting I was then advised being taken to a ward ACU. More tests done, CT scan arranged for Monday morning. The news was traumatic for me I was advised massive lung clot in centre of my lungs. I was immediately transferred to ICU to be observed closely due to the risk of my life. Very terrifying experience. Throughout my ordeal every staff member who supported me was fantastic and I was totally updated throughout. I can't thank all of the staff involved enough, they saved my life-they sprang into action as soon as I was admitted. I had two CT scans second one precaution in case of stomach malignant. I had a third Covid-19 test also before leaving the Hospital. The Doctors were amazing, no stone was left unturned and the nursing staff couldn't do enough. From the cleaning of my room and the dinners and care I got. NHS you should all be proud, every staff member, we are talking total team work here. A massive thank-you from me and my family for the excellent care I received. I am alive today and so grateful. xxxxx
