"DVT diagnosis"

About: Victoria Hospital / General Medicine Victoria Hospital / Radiology

(as the patient),

I was referred to Kirkcaldy after I had seen my own doctor the day before because my leg was swollen.  I suspected a DVT and so did my doctor who rang the hospital and got an appointment for an ultrasound scan for the following morning at 11am.  Very quick.

When I got to the hospital everything was well organised with lane traffic separation, masks handed out and plenty of hand sanitiser.  The person who did the scan was really helpful and professional and very reassuring, telling me  exactly where the thrombosis was.  The conversation was pleasant and informative.  Others from the X-ray department directed me to the DVT clinic.

I was seen almost immediately by Stephanie who was likewise pleasant and informative.  My case history was carefully considered and I then had to provide several blood samples for analysis - a painless procedure.  Again Stephanie was careful to explain exactly what happens when you have a DVT and what the treatment entails.

She was a very easy person to talk to and I was able to ask as many questions as I liked.

I had to wait for about an hour for the results of the 'bloods' to come back - again all the staff were pleasant and helpful, telling me where I could get a cup of tea/coffee and a sandwich.

After an examination by a doctor I got my blood thinning drugs and a lot of advice and then I was free to go.
