"Pre cancerous cells removed"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Day Surgery Queen Margaret Hospital / Plastic Surgery & Burns

(as the patient),

I had plastic surgery to remove pre cancer cells from the skin below my left eye. I was surprised to get called to have the surgery so quickly during the height of the pandemic. The surgery went well and was carried out under local anaesthetic. All members of staff were extremely professional. The surgery was expertly carried out by Stuart.

Unfortunately in the week after surgery the centre of the graft turned black. I called the plastic surgery clinic at QMH on the number I was given and asked to email a photo. I was immediately called back and reassured and told to report to report to the clinic a few days later.

On reporting to the clinic it was found that the the dissolving stitches had not dissolved. Stuart later conjectured that this was the cause of the necrosis to the centre of the graft. Over the next three Mondays I attended the clinic where my wound was diligently and professionally attended to by the nursing staff. (Angela and Jo). My last appointment was today when I was told that I did not need to return as the wound had adequately healed.

Good Morning Mr C,

Thank you for taking the time to post such positive comments regarding your journey through the Plastic Surgery department. We appreciate all feedback to enhance our learning and make improvements to the service.

We have tried as hard as we can, to keep a tight rein on the management of our patients during the pandemic to make sure that patients have access to their treatment in a timely manner. I am very pleased to hear that this worked for you, from clinic to surgery. I will make sure that Stuart Waterston, the Operating Theatre and Day Surgery staff see your praise of their professionalism and expertise.

I am sorry that you experienced some complications with your graft and dissolving stitches. We are taking action to remedy this, by changing the supplier of the stitches as we have recognised that some patients are having similar problems to yours.

All patients who have had surgery are given our contact details should they have any problems and I am glad this worked for you, review of photograph, contact made and a follow up arranged in our clinics. I will feedback to the girls that cared for you and your wound that they did a great job.

I hope that your recovery continues now without complication, but do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further concerns or questions.

Take care and stay safe.

Lynn Coyne
