It has taken a bit of time to give some feedback. I am sure everyone who has lost a loved one as a result of Covid or another cause during the pandemic has found the loss more difficult due to the restrictions.
My dad, Hugh, collapsed on the 6th of December with a suspected stroke since he had lost his speech and had some paralysis of his face. He was treated in the A & E in Monklands hospital and was in a receiving ward for a few days there. We know he was being well looked after in this ward. Thank you to the nurse we never met but held his hand when he was told about his brain tumour and reassured him. He told us he had a wee "greet" since he knew the seriousness of it.
He was then moved to Ward 17 around the 9th of December and we were asked to meet his consultant for a diagnosis. It turned out he had secondary brain tumour caused by a lung tumour. His consultant took a lot of time with us to explain the situation which really helped and we got to spend some time with him. Throughout the time in Ward 17 we were kept well informed by the doctors and they updated us most days. All of the nurses and clinical support workers looked after him really well. His behaviour was impacted by the tumour and he would repeat various stories and his speech was sometimes hard to follow. The nurses and clinical support workers were very patient with him. Also, the domestic staff were fantastic with him since he was always wanting additional things to keep his room tidy. I would like to thank all of them for their kindness and compassion with him.Unfortunately, he developed a chest infection just before New Year which turned in to pneumonia and he passed away on the 2nd of January. To the hospital staff in Ward 17 and the A&E receiving ward from the doctors, nurses, clinical support workers, domestics and speech therapists - I want to say how amazing you all are. You took such good care of him. Covid may have highlighted the dedication of the NHS but you are incredible every day. We will be forever grateful for the way you took care of him during his short illness.
