"Lack of support"

About: Memory Services

(as a service user),

We knew as a family our mum had some degree of confusion, and this was confirmed when we brought her to an appointment for dementia screening. Mum walked into her appointment in March 2020, there was a sign on the door clearing stating dementia screening of which she could ask why she was there - "did they think she was mad" is what she asked us. Mum was seated in front of a display of leaflets advising on how to cope with dementia, ”support available“ etc. and again Mum could read and see these, again adding to her distress and questioning why she was here. We were then separated from mum, she was taken into a room with a nurse and   student. My sister and I were taken into another room with a social worker.

Eventually we were reunited when we were advised our mum had dementia and told what she had scored on the assessment. We were left with this information and advised a consultant would be in touch with us. We heard nothing, had no contact with anyone about this diagnosis, no support, no guidance on what to expect as her condition progressed. Despite us contacting the dementia team and requesting a follow-up review as mum's condition was deteriorating quite rapidly, again we were advised a consultant would be in touch. Mum passed away December, 2020 cared for at home and supported by her loving family without the support, guidance or input from any dementia team.

Dear januaryjz84

I am the Head of Memory Services responsible for the Memory Service, thank you for sharing your story regarding your experience with this service. Firstly can I express my sincere condolences to you and your family on the loss of your mum in December 2020. I am also very sorry regarding the lack of follow up when you attended the Memory Clinic and requested support from the Memory Service. I will review the leaflet provision at our outpatients departments. I would like to take some time to discuss your experience to enable me to get further information regarding your experience so I can ensure other service users don’t have the same experience as you have had. If you wish to proceed with this can you please contact my office on 02838 333332 or email me with your contact details I can contact you at your convenience. Dear januaryjz84 - I just wanted to provide a further update in relation to the issues raised in your story.

I have now reviewed all the leaflets which are provided at the memory clinic. In addition I have also initiated a review of our Dementia Navigator service as your story highlighted to me a need to refine how we are supporting clients on the waiting list to be seen by our medical colleagues.

Many thanks again for providing this valuable feedback

Best wishes

Stephen Dunne
