"My stay in hopsital"

About: Borders General Hospital / Accident & Emergency Borders General Hospital / General Medicine Borders General Hospital / Physiotherapy

(as a service user),

I was admitted to hospital having had an injury which resulted in an MRI and I was admitted on to a ward.

The doctor I experienced in A&E was fantastic and explained everything to me and all the nurses /health care workers made me feel so at ease and comfortable.

The consultant who was dealing with my case going forward was very rude in their approach, I felt they were downplaying the amount of pain I was in and felt as if they was trying to ship me out of the hospital whilst the pain was not under control. They also examined me, at this point they were being very rough and was actually aggravating the pain to the point I had to shout numerous times for them to stop.

The relationship with this doctor after this point wasn't the greatest and I was made to feel so uncomfortable and did not like their presence or attitude towards me - even other patients in the ward commented on this.

There were also a couple of nurses who I was very unhappy with who again made me feel uncomfortable and I recognised a change in the way they spoke to myself in relation to others in the ward who were of a greater age than myself. I also spoke about my mental health as I was struggling from not being able to have visitors and asked if I could speak to the mental health team or another member of staff who may have had a small amount of time to allow me to chat, I was told no and that I would need to wait until Monday (this was a Saturday).

There was also an occasion with a nurse after I had received an enema and was struggling to clean myself up so I asked for some assistance, I was met with a response of "you are 28 years old, you can clean up after yourself" I tried to explain I was in incredible pain and needed some assistance after having the enema but the nurse was not interested, I asked if there was someone else as I no longer wished for this person to be part of my care, they said there wasn't. I mentioned I was going to make a complaint about them and they just told me "to carry on". I was then left to try and clean myself up. I was very distressed and upset by this incident and felt discriminated by my age, especially when the same nurse had upset me on a previous night by the way they were speaking to me and dismissing my concerns about a further symptom by responding "I am not a doctor" and walking away, despite me being very worried and upset. Again, this had been noticed by a couple pf patients on the ward.

There was also an incident one evening when a night staff member burst in to the ward told us we would not be receiving tea trolley tonight and lights were put out at 8.30pm, when usually it has been around 10pm after night time medication. They also mentioned that they had 3 staff members for around 30 patients which I found extremely alarming and just down right irresponsible. I understand there are incredible pressures at the moment but believe that patient care whatever part of the hospital should still be of paramount importance and safely staffed.

I would also like to point out that the domestic and health care support workers were absolutely fantastic and I could not fault them in any way. There was one health care support worker who was absolutely wonderful and had the time to speak with me and calm me down and reassured me when I was upset about being fobbed off surrounding the concerning additional symptom. The physiotherapists I dealt with who supported me to get back on my feet and mobilising were absolutely fantastic and answered all questions, listened to my concerns, gave lots of encouragement and allowed me to take things at my own pace.

Dear Sag526, thanks for taking the time to use Care Opinion. I'm sorry you were unhappy with some of your treatment during your recent stay in the bgh. Can you clarify if this was ward based or the care you received in the Emergency Dept. I'm sorry I cant respond to any issues with your treatment in the ward but I'm happy to respond if you have any issues with your care whilst you were in the ED. I hope you are on the way to recovery now.

Thanks

Lesley Anderson

Hi there, all the staff in the ED department were fantastic and can’t thank them enough for the help I received the time I was there.

It was in the ward I experience the issues.
