"Visit to CAU Ayr hospital"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Combined Assessment Unit (CAU)

(as the patient),

My partner got admitted to hospital towards the end of Jan. Due to the current situation with COVID I was unable to visit him but when I phoned they told me he had a window room so I was able to see him through the window and talk on the phone to him. There was a lovely nurse called Emma who looked after him and as he called her the nice nurse and that she was! At that point he didn’t know her name. He then got moved to station 2 which was just awful compared to CAU. Thankfully he got discharged after only one night in station 2 but we still had no answers to what was wrong with him.

A few days later he got admitted into hospital again and we landed back in CAU - Emma was on night shift this week and when I say she was AMAZING I really mean it! It was a very worrying time for myself and my partner and also family as this was the second admittance in the space of 5 days with constant scans and testing going on and we were still getting no answers as to what was wrong with him. When I would phone, Emma was so helpful and gave me so much time going over all tests etc that had been done and were lined up to be done, She answered all my questions and really put my mind at rest - I knew on the night shift he was in good hands. I honestly can’t thank Emma enough for looking after him so well.

My partner during the day wasn’t really eating & he felt ignored by day shift and he kept asking for better painkillers from the other staff but he just kept being ignored but when Emma came on shift she would get him better painkillers and would make him some toast as he really wasn’t up to eating proper meals that were being provided.

I don’t want to turn this post into a negative post because really I want Emma to get the recognition she deserves but some of the other assistants/nurses in CAU need to take a leaf out of her book and learn how to treat their patients and their family members as this is a stressful time for everyone. Usually visiting hours would allow family members to speak to nurses if they had any questions but due to COVID phone calls are the only way. I once rang and got told they were too busy to speak to me and I should phone back another time and then one of the members of staff asked my partner on discharge why was he was getting me to phone and ask questions and that I was wasting their time as they were too busy.

But once again Emma you’ve been FANTASTIC!! We honestly cant thank you enough!! You’re a star!!

Without a doubt she is the BEST member of the CAU!!!

Dear CVS1995

Thank you very much for your lovely feedback and well done to Emma. I will make sure that she is made aware of your lovely feedback. I'm sorry that this was not your experience of all our staff and I will make sure your post is shared with the Clinical Lead for CAU to ensure it encourages staff reflection.

Please be assured speaking to relatives whilst visiting is so restricted is an important part of the staff's role and I know that the Lead will echo my thoughts to the staff involved.

I hope your partner is recovering well

Best Wishes

Laura
