"Medical abandonment against minority patient"

About: Lauriston Building Stonehouse Hospital / Ear, Nose & Throat University Hospital Wishaw

(as the patient),

I am suffering from persistent acute tinnitus (which is on 24/7), pain and perforation in left ear.

During August 2019, an audiologist at Stonehouse hospital fitted hearing aids in my both ears telling those to be best tinnitus devices and I was promised follow up within twelve weeks. They did not provide me cleaning kit for the said hearing aids/tinnitus devices. The audiologist never sent me follow up which was promised and I am still suffering on that aspect and it is now February 2021, neither that audiologist and NHS Lanarkshire written to NHS Lothian about it.

The backdrop is in July 2019, I requested that audiologist for tympanometry. They performed   and my left ear tympanogram was not normal at all, but this doctor told me that was normal without assigning a reason. Previously in May 2019 they had fitted me used hearing aids, which they replaced in August 2019 and admitted having provided me used ones.

In July 2019, I reported   to patient affairs (NHS Lanarkshire) about this misconduct, including the ill advice about my   left ear tympanogram and requested referral to Royal ENT hospital London, from the consultant (NHS Lanarkshire)   who referred me to this audiologist at stonehouse hospital.   In consequence, NHS Lanarkshire discharged me and that consultant from NHS Lanarkshire written letter to NHS Ayrshire & Arran where I was not resident at that time. It had numerous consequences and adverse impact on me.

In July 2020, I requested my medical records from NHS Lanarkshire under SAR, GDPR. NHS Lanarkshire did not send my health records pertaining to my clinic appointments held at audiology department stonehouse hospital and the very letter consultant written to NHS Ayrshire and Arran (where I was not resident at that time) regarding my request for treatment/referral in Royal ENT hospital London.

Moreover during August 2020, my left ear hearing aid stopped working. I sent that to NHS Lothian by post. NHS Lothian   cleaned wax from the tube, which was blocked and I was told, it is "older type hearing aid" and will have to be replaced (not replaced yet unfortunately). What this means, the hearing aids/tinnitus devices those were fitted only a year ago declared older type (I was told best type initially) by another health board within NHS Scotland in a year time, which certainly means not fit for the purpose in first place as I am suffering worse kind of tinnitus because of which I have had to give up my self employment and my request for treatment/referral to   Royal ENT Hospital was and is more than reasonable which has   not been met yet and all the three health boards (NHS Ayrshire & Arran, Lanarkshire and Lothian) are causing harms to me and my well being on this aspect.

It is happening to me time and again and I am certain it is because I am a patient from ethnic minority, this all feels like constructive and orchestrated mistreatment.

Dear Tariq

Thank you very much for getting in touch with us via Care Opinion and like Marjorie, I was very sorry to read what has been happening. It does sound as though this has been a very difficult and frustrating time for you as I read that you have been invovled with 3 different health boards.

Care Opinion is a route for people to give us anonymous feedback. If you would like us to look into this further we will need some further information. If you would like us to do this I would be grateful if you can please contact the Patient Experience Team (feedback@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk) who will try and help.

Please be assured that the management team are aware of your feedback and once again please can l apologise for your experiences.

Kind regards

Jeannette

Update posted by Tar21 (the patient)

I wrote to NHS Lothian and Lanarkshire in past, they both did not help me. Staff that offered to help did not provide their own email contacts. If staff genuinely wish to help and resolve these matters, I should be able to communicate with them directly.
