"My depression and social anxiety."

About: Inclusion Thurrock (Talking Therapies)

(as a service user),

I had never admitted to having anxiety or depression until something happened in my life that left me no choice but to seek help. I had felt helpless and I had no other option. Until I turnt to my gp who helped me get in contact with inclusion Thurrock, I had never done any sort of one to one counselling before, especially online with the new covid rules. I was nervous and shy, especially the first session, I was timid and closed off however the counsellor I had was amazing! The counsellor helped me realise that it is okay to face anxiety and depression and it is okay to experience them it is how you deal with it and you reduce it that matters. Covid 19 has changed everybody’s life’s, and in fact has worsened most people’s mental health. My counsellor had helped suggest some activities and support systems that can help me through lockdown and the ever changed regulations. I am incredibly thankful for the experience and can honestly say it has helped me shape into a better, more positive person. I am excited to take my experience further in my life and hopefully help others seek help.

Dear Rhiana,

Thank you for sharing such an honest and open story with us.

I am so sorry to hear that something happened in your life which left you feeling helpless and as though you had no other option. Often it is only when we reach that cross road that we decide it is time to seek help and I am so pleased you spoke to your GP about how you were feeling.

Those first few steps of asking for help, having the initial assessment and your first therapy session can seem daunting if therapy is something that you have never experienced before. It is our priority as therapists to ensure that you feel comfortable and at ease as soon as you contact us so I am pleased that you found your counsellor to be amazing during your first session.

I think it is really important that you have mentioned how much Covid-19 has affected all of our mental health. We have each been impacted by the pandemic in different ways but one thing is the same for everyone, and that is that we have never experienced a time like this before so it is natural for things such as anxiety and depression to occur. As you said, it is okay to experience these emotions but learning how to cope with them is so important. It sounds as though you have learnt techniques and activities to use to help you cope with such emotions. It is important now to continue practising these techniques!

Thank you once again for sharing your story. You absolutely will be helping others to seek help by sharing your experience on here.

We wish you the very best of luck for your future.

Take care,

Jade
