I started working with CGL Cambridge a little over a year ago after I had begun to realise how much my alcohol use was becoming a problem. To be honest at first I wasn't sure I really needed help, but after speaking to some of the key workers and attending the structured support groups of Foundations of Change and Growth, I realised their benefits.
There is always a level of shame attached to admitting alcohol use has gotten out of control, but the support provided is amazing, and you are in no way judged. The groups also gave me an opportunity to make some great friends who have become part of my support network, and we rely on each other for when we have tough days. In the last year (and particularly during lockdown) I have used the time to turn my life around when I could have easily used lockdown as an excuse to sink into a world of self pity and despair. One worker in particular, Eleanor, has been an amazing source of wisdom and support for me, providing me with the tools needed to take back control of my life, find the freedom from alcohol but also recognise where risky situations could occur and how best to manage them. As a result I feel much stronger, healthier and able to move forward and live the best life I can, free from alcohol.
If I could give advice to anyone contemplating using this service, I would thoroughly recommend it. All the support workers are such nice people, there are lots of different groups available to support you in whatever way you need, and no one judges. They will support and guide you through your recovery to become the best person you can be.
"CGL gave me great support"
