"Care in Coronary Care Unit Scarborough Hospital"

About: Scarborough General Hospital / Cardiology

(as a service user),

I was admitted to CCU after being assessed in A&E.  I was put on a monitor and then assessed for the fitting of a pacemaker.  At all times the staff were compassionate, kind, sensitive to my anxieties, supportive, reassuring and considerate of my needs.  I would like to recommend Albert for a special mention as his smiley face and sense of humour were such a morale booster.  He was such a shining light!!  Other members of staff on this ward were so caring from the Lead Sister, Vicky, to the lovely tea lady, Shirley.  Every area was well serviced and the whole ward seemed to jog along like a well oiled machine.  Nothing was too  much trouble for any one of the staff and, obviously Vicky led from the front and was well supported by Deputy Sisters Gemma and Amanda.  Ethel is another member of staff worthy of a mention, she is such a warm hearted, caring, lovely lady.  It is very hard to single out any other  members of staff as name labels were covered with the plastic aprons!!  I would like to say that the care and courteous manner with which I was treated by everyone could not have been bettered had I paid!

There is, of course, an exception to this rule.  Sad to say that the technician who carried out an ultra sound, was not in the least courteous. I couldn't tell you what they were called as they never introduced themselves, just turned up at the ward door (I was in a single room), with a machine and proceeded to move the bed, asking if I could help (?) and the locker, so that they could get the machine into the room.  I eventually had to ask them what they were doing, after they removed my pyjama top and covered part of my body with a sheet.  I had a cannular in my left arm and was asked to hold my left breast out of the way of this instrument.  I could only do this for a short period of time as the needle, in the cannular, was becoming really painful.  I tried to use my right arm, but was told, quite sharply, that that was no good. This is the only time, during my stay in CCU that I just felt like a piece of meat on a butcher's slab.  There has to be an exception to the rule and this person was it for me.  Good manner cost nothing and the least this person could have done was to introduce themselves and tell me what they were going to do.  Not rocket science.

Everyone else, First Class Treatment, First Class Caring and First Class Professionalism.

I would like to commend all the Cardiologist team.  They kept me in the picture about what was going to happen and I had every confidence in them.  The surgeon who did the procedure, Mr. Ahkmed, (apologies for the spelling)  was just fantastic and confidence came out of every pore. He had a great sense of humour, which was complimented by the staff, in the department, where the procedure was carried out. At no time whatsoever did I feel that I was not in the most professional of hands. Thank you all,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your valued feedback. Firstly, it is great to hear your surgery went well and that you are on the mend! Secondly, it is absolutely wonderful to hear how caring and warm hearted all the staff were towards you on your stay with us. Ensuring our patients feel as you did on your stay is of the utmost importance to us, especially in current times. I am certain the staff you have mentioned by name will be so happy to know you felt this way. I am also so sorry to hear of your uncomfortable meeting with the member of staff who performed your ultrasound, this is of course not how we do things within the trust, so I can only offer my sincere apologies. Feedback such as this ensures we know what we are doing right and what we can improve on as a trust, so again I thank you for taking the time to let us know about your stay. I hope, should you ever need our services again, that we provide the same caring and first class service you received on this instance.
