My enlarged thymus gland was discovered by chance on a CT scan when I was scanned for a different reason. Dr. Surange and her team at Stepping Hill Hospital were excellent in their professional care and management, giving me all the tests I needed to prepare me for any possible surgery that may be required. She explained everything to me in detail in a way that was easy for me to understand as a layman. She told me that there was a possibility (although unlikely) that there was cancer present (thymoma), and that the only way to tell for sure was a PET scan, followed by a biopsy.
I had the PET scan at Christies Hospital which showed no aggressive cancer, but I was told that there could be a benign tumour which could possibly, over time, develop into an active tumour. Dr. Surange advised me that she would refer me to a specialist at Wythenshawe Hospital for further investigation.
At Wythenshawe, I saw Mr. Joshi and after a discussion, we decided it would be best to elect to remove the thymus, it being just as easy to do so as to get a biopsy because of the awkward positioning of the gland behind the breast bone.
I had the procedure done on in November, 2020 and I was back home 2 days later, and have healed nicely in the meantime.
The follow-up from both Wythenshawe and Stepping Hill Hospitals has been brilliant, and the staff and doctors and nurses at both hospitals have been superb, not only in their professional care and demeanour, but also in their cheerful and uplifting attitudes.
My wife and I can't thank you all enough for your care and consideration.
