"Sigmoidoscopy"

I was referred for a Sigmoidoscopy.  From the first phone call about my appointment the whole experience was good,  I was welcomed by name by the receptionist which made me feel I was expected. The unit looked brand new, although I know it isn't, but everything was clean and tidy.  Even the noticeboards in the waiting area were tidy and informative. 

Each nurse involved on my journey through the clinic was polite and helpful, introducing themselves, putting me at my ease, and explaining their role.  Each handover from one nurse to the next was done professionally, and audibly, so I knew the care was continuing.   Slight worries I had about the procedure were dealt with with explanations and reassurance.   The procedure itself, while uncomfortable, was carried out in consultation with myself, with the nurse practitioner explaining what she was doing, and sharing information about what she was seeing - and what i was also seeing - on the screen.

The procedure was actually fascinating, and I was reassured all the way through.  When I felt anything they seemed to know and explained and acknowledged those feelings. All of this ensured there was no embarrassment for me!

Following the procedure I was again in the hands of a professional nurse, who again acknowledge what I might be feeling, made me comfortable in the recovery area, and brought a very welcome cup of coffee and biscuits.  She checked who was collecting me and offered to phone my daughter to say I was just about finished.  I heard her on the phone and she too was polite and professional.

The whole experience reflected the very best of NHSScotland's care.
