"Gynaecology Outpatient"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I feel angry.  All I needed was a prescription for Utrogestan which I was told is impossible because it is "off label".  Excuse after poor excuse from this staff member who just seems to dislike me as a patient capable of intelligent debate.  Any consultant can prescribe an "off label" medicine if they consider it to be of value.  Utrogestan is not indicated for menorraghia but it IS indicated for HRT by NICE / BNF.  There are many American and Australian materials that state it is suitable for menorraghia and give the dose.  It does not require  more than a cursory Google to find these.

This person has said they would even rather give a hysterectomy than prescribe Utrogestan, which is simply a bio-identical progesterone. Put simply all progesterones have a similar effect on the uterine lining to a greater or lesser extent.  The dose is the only thing that really needs adjusting in treating menorraghia.  Its not really hard to understand.

For someone in my situation - which I have tried to explain to this person, who simply isn't interested - Utrogestan is the only option.

There are two fantastic advantages to bio-identical micronised progesterones.  This is exactly the same as your own body produces.  It means1) less likely to cause the severe depression some women (yes, me!) experience when taking synthetic progesterones2) can be used vaginally as per Dr G Mannsberg's book "The M Word" which means a lower dose can be taken, in a similar way to using an IUD. I can't understand how a supposed expert on HRT cannot comprehend that I am in the age bracket where they could easily prescribe this and nobody would batt an eyelid.  I am certain they are just being stubborn and objectionable. Well, those times are changing.  We shall fight back.

No surprise that this staff member is pressing for more outpatient hysteroscopies with no anaesthesia.  What absolute butchery.  We must always consider budget before comfort.  Those consultants that do, climb the greasy pole faster. After a round of utterly ridiculous exchanges by email we are no further ahead. I'm fed up of being treated like this from people whose wages I paid.  The NHS is not "free" as people seem to think.  It is an insurance scheme and I demand the treatment I paid for, and not to be told to go private, as I was today.  No shockers if I went private in this location, who would I see?  Most like this effing person or some other cretinous overpaid hooray.
