"Care offered to my dying Mum"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Medical Assessment Unit University Hospital Hairmyres / Respiratory Medicine (Ward 12)

(as a service user),

A few weeks ago, my Mum who had severe COPD was quite unwell.  A GP called to the house and decided she required hospital admission.

My Mum was admitted to ward 2 and then ward 12. Mum was diagnosed with an infective exacerbation  COPD.

Unfortunately following a move to ward 12  my Mums health deteriorated further.  Myself and my brother were updated on her progress and unfortunately it became clear that my Mum was too unwell and we knew she wouldn’t improve.

This obviously was terribly sad for us but what I want to make sure is conveyed is the way in which we were informed of her situation. The nurse was very caring and explained everything clearly and with empathy.

When it came to visit the ward to say goodbye the same nurse - C Coutts was so gentle and caring with my Mum and ourselves.  It was so lovely for Mum still to be called by her first name.

At handover - nurse Coutts spoke to us again and made sure we had another nurse for support.

Despite Covid restrictions - we didn’t feel rushed but felt supported by the ward team which made a terribly sad time more bearable

Dear T Main

My sincerest apologies for the loss of your mum.

I will ensure your lovely comments are passed onto the teams involved in your mums care as they will be very pleased to hear that they were able to provide support to you, your brother and most importantly your mum.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback to us about your experience of what I imagine has been a very difficult time for you and your family.

Best wishes

Angela

Thank you for taking the time to write to Care Opinion about the experience you and your family had when your mother was an in-patient on wards 2 and 12 within University Hospital Hairmyres. I was sorry to learn about the circumstances surrounding your mum's admission but that you felt this sad situation was made more bearable by the support offered by the ward team and one of our nurses in particular. I will ensure this is conveyed to our ward staff and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your kind comments at this very difficult time.
