"The benefits of recovery groups (Stepping Stones)"

About: Inclusion Recovery Hampshire / Aldershot

(as a service user),

When I first started the long journey to recovery from alcohol addiction, I was very reluctant to participate in group sessions having always been a solitary drinker and by nature a solitary person. There is a sense of foreboding about letting other people into your life and sharing your problems, openly and honestly with them.

With Peter's encouragement, I was able to settle into the group more easily than I had anticipated and have benefited tremendously as a result, he's able to nurture a spirit of camaraderie and it's like a meeting with friends with whom we can all be totally honest and upfront about the issues we are facing - it removes the sense of loneliness and isolation which so often accompanies this addiction.

I have now achieved 8 months of sobriety, but I am not complacent and Peter's gentle nudges keep me focussed on my recovery.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback to us.

Firstly, congratulations on 8 months of sobriety. What a wonderful achievement and one of which you should be proud.

I am so pleased that you were able to overcome your anxiety of joining a group and that you have stuck with it and have reaped the benefits of participating in the sessions. Group work can be so valuable in recovery as it gives the opportunity to share experiences, receive support and guidance and form positive relationships with those in the group and hopefully reduce the sense of isolation.

I hope you will continue to find the group helpful in your recovery and wish you all the very best for the future. I will pass on your positive comments to Pete and the Aldershot Team.

Keep safe and well,
