"Hydrotherapy unit"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 21-23)

(as a service user),

Having been given physiotherapy in the Paisley hospital for arthritis and after a while doing the excercises at home I felt that they were not helping much anymore.

I was advised to try hydrotherapy instead. I could not believe how much it helped. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable and on being given the movements it was possible to carry on at your own pace and carrying out these excercises in a heated pool made a huge difference.  I had actually tried on 4 occasions to excercise in the Renfrew swimming baths but due to the cool temp of the water, it was a waste of time as my muscles were tense as against being relaxed in the hydro pool which was warm. After my sessions had ran out I was informed of an 'out of hours' session could be available where the staff basically gave up their lunchtime to supervise and allow people in to use the facilities which would have been running anyway. Myself and many other people used this facility to our benefit as basically there was nothing else available.

I have heard that the hydrotherapy dept might be closing and if that is the case I feel that will be a huge mistake. The mobility the warm water was able to give is amazing, I was able to perform movements and excercises which I would have no chance of achieving elsewhere.

As I said the staff were awesome and to lose this facility would be a huge shame.

Dear GFin2021

Thank you for your comments regarding the Hydrotherapy Pool at the Royal Alexandria Hospital. We always welcome feedback from our service users and are glad you had such a positive experience when accessing our hydrotherapy service sessions.

Unfortunately we had to suspend the service in both the Royal Alexandria Hospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary in response to the Covid Pandemic. This is a temporary closure and there is no plans to permanently close either of the pools.

The Royal Alexandria is also in process of undergoing a repair in preparation for when we can restart. As it is a healthcare environment we have to follow government guidelines regarding patient and staff safety. This includes ensuring patients and staff socially distance within a hydrotherapy pool and follow personal protective equipment guidelines. Due to the humid and wet environment of hydrotherapy this has proven to be a challenging task. We are working to address these issues however our plans have been put on hold due to the recent lockdown and changes to restrictions. While this is ongoing we ae unable to give a date of when hydrotherapy will open but please be assured that once it is safe to do so hydrotherapy will resume. Due to Covid restrictions we will only be able to offer one to one sessions initially and we will be unable to run the out of hours sessions you previously attended.

In the meantime we would be more than happy to arrange a telephone call for you with one of our Physiotherapists to discuss your current symptoms and look at alternative options to help you manage your condition. If this would be helpful then please get in touch with us on 0141 201 6626

Kind Regards
