"Consistently mis-diagnosed"

About: Chorley & South Ribble Hospital / General surgery Royal Preston Hospital / General surgery Royal Preston Hospital / Gynaecology Royal Preston Hospital / Urology

(as a parent/guardian),

Over the past 3 years, my daughter who was 17 years old has suffered terribly at the hands of the NHS staff at The Royal Preston Hospital. Luckily, in pre Covid19 days i was at her bedside fighting her corner and eventually got the treatment she needed.

In September 2017, aged 17 we was tried to be fobbed off she had "trapped wind" it was an inflammed Appendix and keyhole surgery performed the same day.
In August 2019, aged 19 years she was "discharged" by a doctor in SAU with "Gasterioitus" and 'Acid reflux' medication with no heartburn symptoms at 2.30AM onto the streets of Preston! doubled over in pain. I had overheard a conversation there was blood in her urine, i was told i heard wrong? bringing her home i went to the GP first thing with a urine sample which tested positive for blood.

After another trip to A&E with my daughter doubled over in November 2019 in pain i demanded a scan, this had been going on long enough. Agreed  A ultrasound showed Gall Stones and again was admitted to SAU and was transfered to the Gynae ward... she didnt see a doctor/consultant for 2 days and the Gynae ward sister said they are ringing a department over them as they left her in pain with no pain relief and as she wasn't under the "Gynae" doctor they couldn't get their doctor to assist with the pain relief. Again, i was at my daughters bedside pushing for answers. Eventually she was transfered by ambulance to Chorley Hospital and the next day she was taken to theatre for surgery to remove her Gall Bladder.

Now, in January 2020, she had the pain back worse than ever, unable to breath properly for the pain or even talk to make conversation or tell me whats wrong i managed to get her into the car and took her Chorley A&E, (which we have had better care from). My daughter couldnt even stand up straight for the pain. Now Covid19 times, i had to wait in my car for her. They sent her back out with a message to book into SAU in RPH. I knew then this is going to be a struggle to get proper care and any much needed treatment.

The problem i have is now SAU have sent my daughter to WARD 10. We've had a horrendous time with a bunch of staff on that ward, they've hardly answered the phone, they haven't communicated properly. My daughter was given a cup of tea which she spilt on the bed and it was 3 days before they changed the sheet. Im not allowed into see my daughter but the problem i have is the Consultant who came to see my daughter. Just by looking at my daughter this doctor can tell "she has a trapped nerve in her stomach". No need for the Endoscopy that we was expecting to see if there has been Gallstones deposited into my daughters Pancreas or Liver, because this amazing Consultant knows its a trapped nerve, no repeat bloods needed, although mumbled something about protein levels and has prescribed Anti depressants as pain relief.

Now, admitted on WARD 10 from early hours Saturday morning through to being discharged on Wednesday evening. She has been informed she has been sharing the same bay for 5 days with a lady whose now tested POSITIVE for Covid 19. So they have just discharged my daughter with the same symptoms she arrived with, a box of Anti-deppressants (for pain relief) and a 99% chance of having Covid 19, back to my home with a clinically vunerable child, and told to self isolate for 10 days? I thought our government wasnt using the 'Herd immunity theory, but it seems like WARD 10 AT RPH have took the decision to. We are probably one of a few families who have been extra careful and have escaped this virus for the sake of my clinically vunerable 14 year old child. Obviously some procedures have not been followed if for 5 days my daughter has shared a bay with a  Covid 19 patient?

The only way i can describe RPH is along the lines of a 'Fancy dress party' in a hospital setting. This hospital is a "Lancashire teaching hospital". If these people are "teaching" students to work in hospitals. Then god help the NHS.

And as for PALS, absolute no help at all in the past. Useless. Not even wasting my time with that. Just waiting for the next wave of unbearable pain my 20 year old daughter has to put up with before driving back to A&E and starting this whole palava of a cycle again. Hopefully not too late as to cause unrepairable consequences.

Good afternoon and thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback.

I am sorry to note that your daughter has had such a poor experience at our hospitals and can give assurance this is not the standard that we expect.

I was also extremely concerned to read that you have been unable to obtain any help or assistance from our PALS service in the past. I recognize the frustration that will have been caused. I would ask if you would give us the opportunity to look into this matter and contact us on PALS@lthtr.nhs.uk. Whilst we can not take away from your daughter's experience we can ensure that this does not happen again in the future.

Take care and stay safe.
