"Trying to get information about daughter"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Acute Medical Initial Assessment Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Renal Medicine (Kidney)

(as a parent/guardian),

I can't tell you how angry i am. My daughter was taken to A&E. She had no phone or money with her. The next morning  I rang the hospital switchboard to find out if she had been admitted and was told she was in ward 101 and I was given the ward telephone number. I rang that number every half hour but no one ever answered. On the next day i rang the hospital switchboard again to be told my daughter was now in ward 108 and the operated tried to put me through to the ward but again no one answered the phone. I was again given the ward number and spent the rest of the day ringing that number but my calls were never answered

Bearing in mind i had no idea how my daughter was i was understandably very upset. I knew she would be anxious because she suffers with various mental health problems and because she had no phone she had no way of contacting anyone. Finally as a last resort i contacted my daughter's social worker to see if she could find out what was going on and she managed to tell me how my daughter was.

I understand hospital staff are all very busy at the moment but I find this situation unacceptable.

My daughter is now very very angry with me because she felt abandoned, alone and scared

Dear Hurt Lady,

I am really sorry to hear of your very negative experience in attempting to contact the hospital to have an update on your daughter's condition. This must have been an extremely worrying and frustrating time for you. This is not acceptable and not what I would expect.

I understand the importance of communication and the distress this causes when not done right, so will personally share your experience with the charge nurse of W108, in the hope that no one else should feel so isolated from their loved ones.

Thank you for sharing your experience and giving us this opportunity to apologise and improve our care.

Should you wish to discuss this with me personally, please call me on 01224 550075.

Nurse Manager Lesley Gow.
