"They were abrupt and hurt me"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Maternity care (Ward 31)

(as a service user),

I was planned to be induced, When I arrived luckily my husband was allowed to stay for two hours due to that being the allocated visiting time for the room I got for the day. Due to running late my induction didn’t start until he was away despite it supposed to being scheduled for 3. So I had to go through the start of this process alone.

By the time I had had three tablets a doctor came to decide if I was far enough along to get my waters broken or not. This doctor was the reason if I ever have another child I will be an elective section, they were abrupt and hurt me.

When checking me they just decided to give me a sweep without warning. This was the most horrific pain I’ve ever been in, my husband was saying to stop but they didn’t. Then they said I wouldn’t getting me waters broken and left. By this point I was screaming in pain.

After this the midwives apologised for my experience and another doctor checked me and said I could get my waters broken. If it wasn’t for the midwives and that doctor I wouldn’t have coped, as right after the surprise sweep it was time for my husband to leave.

After being taken to the labour suite I made it very clear that I did not want that doctor near me again. Every other member of staff I encountered after that couldn’t have been any more helpful or nicer to me. And I’m forever grateful for that.

Dear Boyd 94

Thank you for your feedback and I am saddened to hear of the distress that you have experienced during your examination. This is not the standard of care we expect for our patients. Can you please email me your name, date of birth and a contact number so that I can look into this further. My email address is Angela.Duffy2@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

I am pleased to hear that every other member of staff that you met you found to be helpful and I hope that both you are your baby are doing well at home.
