"RAH Paisley Hydrotherapy"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Outpatients

(as a service user),

Prior to coronavirus restrictions, I was very fortunate to have access to the hydrotherapy pool and the excellent staff, at the RAH in Paisley. I cannot fully express how important that service was to me and how much it is missed. I have Joint Hypermobility Syndrome. Traditional physiotherapy was exhausting and often painful. Hydrotherapy was initially very challenging too, then I began to make the kind of progress that I had never experienced with traditional physiotherapy (and often high duty painkilling medication). Despite being aware that progress was being made, I didn't fully appreciate how much until the pandemic made it impossible to continue, and the levels of pain, stiffness and fatigue returned. I have spoken to others who have had the opportunity to access hydrotherapy for a variety of conditions, and every one had positive experiences and can't wait for the service to be available to them again.

Dear Waterbaby

Thank you for your comments regarding the Hydrotherapy Pool at the Royal Alexandria Hospital. We always welcome feedback from our service users and are glad you had such a positive experience when accessing our hydrotherapy service.

Unfortunately we had to suspend the service in both the Royal Alexandria Hospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary in response to the Covid Pandemic. We are in the process of remobilising our outpatient therapy service and hydrotherapy is very much part of these plans. As it is a healthcare environment we have to follow government guidelines regarding patient and staff safety. This includes ensuring patients and staff socially distance within a hydrotherapy pool and follow personal protective equipment guidelines. Due to the humid and wet environment of hydrotherapy this has proven to be a challenging task.

We are working to address these issues however our plans have been put on hold due to the recent lockdown and changes to restrictions. While this is ongoing we are unable to give a date of when hydrotherapy will open but please be assured that once it is safe to do so hydrotherapy will resume.

In the meantime we would be more than happy to arrange a telephone call for you with one of our Physiotherapists to discuss your current symptoms and look at alternative options to help you manage your condition. If this would be helpful then please get in touch with us on 0141 201 6626.

Kind Regards

Alison Leiper
