"Lack of awareness of ASD and GDD"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde

(as the patient),

We had contacted our GP surgery seeking to be put on the register as carers. We have three children with ASD, with our youngest also having a GDD and requiring wheelchair services. The GP believes however that as parents we don't need to do any more to care for our children than anyone else.

Two of our children are assessed for DLA with one receiving high rate care and mobility, and the other receiving low rate for both, we are still in the process of applying for our oldest. This yet again is an example to GPs, who have little to do with the care of the children due to being under Specialist Children's Services, showing no understanding of neurological disorders and the care needs involved. The GP has therefore refused to put us on the carers register. Disgusted by this service from a family surgery who were unwilling to make referrals to Specialist Children's Services in the first place.

Dear Andypn

I am very sorry to read about the issues you have been experiencing with your GP.

As GP’s are independent contractors with their own feedback systems and complaints processes I would suggest contacting the Practice Manager in the first instance to discuss the GP’s refusal to add you to the carers register. If you don’t feel comfortable I can contact your GP Practice on your behalf. If you could get in touch with me at PatientExperience@ggc.scot.nhs.uk with the name of the practice, and contact information that you would be happy for the GP surgery to reach you on.

There is a Family Support and Information Centre based at the Royal Hospital for Children who may be able to provide you with advice regarding DLA and the Carers Register. You can contact them on 0141 452 4012 or email fsis@ggc.scot.nhs.uk You can find out more information about the service here: www.nhsggc.org.uk/media/256096/313620-support-information-service-leaflet-rhc.pdf

Another avenue for support would be your local Patient Advice and Support Service team that can be reached via www.cas.org.uk/pass or 0800 028 2816. They work to provide advice and support on a range of patient rights issues.

I hope the above information is helpful.

Kind Regards

Nicole
