"Partial loss of vision."

About: Birmingham Midland Eye Centre (Bmec)

(as the patient),

I attended Birmingham Eye Hospital following a referal from my local hospital (Russells Hall Hospital) as the doctor I saw there in Emergency Care felt I would benefit from more specialised treatment.

I was seen by a triage nurse alongside reception and then waited approximately 2.5 hours to be seen by a nurse who gave me a basic eye test. I then waited a further 2+ hours to be seen by a doctor who advised me that there was a swelling at the back of my eye. I was asked to come back 4 days later for a scan and a further consultation. I was there for 7 hours in total.

I returned on the later date as requested and checked in at outpatients reception. Following a wait of 90 minutes I went back to reception the query the wait time. I was told I would be next to be called. I waited a further hour. Eventually a nurse called my name, apologising profusely for a problem with the booking system which had led to me being overlooked.

The nurse gave me an eye test. I then saw a Doctor and then had a scan.

I then saw the doctor again who advised me that the scan revealed a slight change in the back of my eye. They went on to say that most people would not notice the effect of this on their vision, a fact that they could not apply to me as a field of vision test had not been carried out.  I had already told them that I was unable to apply eye makeup due to the loss of vision that was more apparent when my right eye was closed. It is also difficult to complete close work - reading  writing.

I felt that they should have carried out further investigation if the change they saw in the back of me eye was not significant enough to cause the amount of sight loss I was experiencing. I felt this person was at best brusque and dismissive and at worse rude and neglectful.

They said I would receive an appointment within two weeks and dismissed me. They did not explain what this appointment was for or in what clinic.

I have since called outpatients to chase up this appointment as more than two weeks have passed to be advised that the doctor had written 2 months on the paperwork.

I have since developed an area of loss of vision in my right eye but am very reluctant to return to Birmingham Eye Hospital.

I have never had any cause to complain about the NHS but sight is so very precious and the treatment I received was diabolical.
