"Anxiety support postpartum"

About: Inclusion Thurrock (Talking Therapies)

(as a service user),

CBT provided me with a safe space where I could be open and honest about my thoughts and experiences without any fear of judgement. This was most appreciated during a time when I was feeling increasingly overwhelmed with continuous anxious thoughts. Therapy enabled me to learn more about myself and the difficulties I was experiencing, and to understand and reflect on both the unhelpful thoughts and strategies I was using. It also provided me with support to challenge and try and change these.

Pat, my Therapist was very supportive, kind and patient with me. She was also challenging in a helpful way. I am very grateful for the support I received and feel it has helped me to feel less overwhelmed, led to a reduction in my anxieties, and helped me to be more mindful and kinder to myself. All of this has enabled me to be in a place where I can now enjoy my time with baby. So thank you so much.

Dear Tilly4*,

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Whilst becoming a parent is often one of the best things that will happen to us, it can be a particularly anxious time, as you have described. After all, there are a lot of things to manage as a parent and therefore a lot of things to be more anxious about!

The anxious thoughts you describe are themselves very common, but as you've highlighted it is what we do with these thoughts that can cause problems. Our natural response to anxiety can be unhelpful in managing these experiences, so it is often helpful to challenge these strategies and learn new ones - CBT allows us to do this.

I am sure Pat will be so pleased to hear how helpful this has been for you and that it has offered you the space to take care of and be kinder to yourself. It is particularly nice to hear that your sessions have allowed you to put the anxiety to one side and focus on the more enjoyable side of having a new baby!

I wish you (and your baby!) all the best and hope you are able to continue using these techniques for the future.

Kind regards,

Adam
