"My Mum's struggle with mobility in later years"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Community Nursing Service Lanarkshire Community Services / Dietetics and Nutrition Lanarkshire Community Services / Occupational Therapy

(as a carer),

I called the Dr. Mum was unwell and losing weight. She was also struggling with loss of mobility.

The Dr arranged a series of home visits with tests for her and referrals to Dietician and Occupational Health.
We got a house call and assessment from occupational team attached to the surgery.
I just can't thank them enough for the practical support and moral boosting encouragement the gave my mum. Prior to their visit mum refused to use any equipment, she is a strong woman and I think she viewed as failure. Consequently I was literally carrying her around the house and her mobility was really deteriorating.
They spoke to her adult to adult in such a gentle and practical way it made all the difference. They never talked down to her, which is so important.
We were supplied with mobility aids and got follow up to make sure everything worked. The folk who delivered and set everything up were kind, considerate and helpful with good advice, The surgery kept in touch to make sure she was happy and everthing was working.
Mum is well on the mend infection gone, appetite improved and mobility vastly increased. She is happy to have regained some of her independence. It has helped her mood and self esteem. Her confidence is returning.
The help we got has taken a load of me both physically and emotionally.
Knowing that there is a professional team available locally who are here to support me as a carer has helped us both immensly.

Dear Risa12,

Thank you for your post. I am really pleased to hear that the support your mum received was not only effective but also respectful and compassionate.

NHS Lanarkshire promotes a multi-professional approach to care and treatment and this is a great example of benefits of this.

I hope your mum does not require our service further however the service is here if she does.

I will pass your generous comments on to the staff concerned.
