"Staff should know about face mask exemptions"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

After having migranes for over a week the left side of my body went numb so I called my doctor who sent me to A&E to get scans.   I was seen pretty quickly was scanned and bloods checked immediately, I was asked to wear a mask but as I am medically exempt I refused which was accepted.   After sitting waiting for 7 hours for the results I went to the nurses station to see if they new if it was going to be much longer.   A doctor approached me and told me I had to wear a mask.   I said I was medically exempt and they started shouting at me! Saying that in a hospital you need to wear a mask and I said not if your medically exempt which is the legislation, they continued to shout at me causing me to have a panic attack so I left the hospital barely able to breathe or talk crying uncontrollably due to the way I had just been treated.   I went to my friend's house and the hospital rang me and asked me to come back so I did - I believe it was the same doctor who had shouted at me but cant be certain.

I came back the person at reception said I had to wear a mask I explained I was medically exempt and was told you have to wear the mask and that's it.   I said you are forcing me to go against the legislation.   I cannot and will not wear a mask! I listed my medical exemptions, which I don't have to, and they just rudely said to me that if I'm that ill you would think I would wear a mask! Then said if you have an exemption card then you don't have to wear the mask - I explained I didn't have one and I didn't need to prove it to her, again this is in the legislation, but this individual refused to let me in without it.   I was given no choice but to take the mask. This is against my rights and that receptionist and doctor completely humiliated me! Another member of staff  on that night was also absolutely horrible the way I was treated, no respect, no patience and no empathy!

Thankfully the doctor I came back to see from the medical team saw me straight away when I walked into a&e and was absolutely brilliant, so kind, caring and helped put me at ease.   I think its important for your staff to be properly informed of the legislation about mask wearing and medical exemptions the way I was treated the other night was an absolute disgrace. I went in there sick and felt that I was abused by some of the staff.

Dear Lsa86, further to my initial response, I have linked with colleagues for their advice on this matter and can now provide a further update.

We do welcome all feedback to the Emergency Department, so that good practice can be shared and where there is unacceptable practice it is addressed, improvements are put in place to prevent reoccurrence and the learning is shared for the team. We are so sorry that the attitude of some staff made you feel unwelcome and it is certainly unacceptable for a patient to be shouted at.

We expect that all patients will be treated with respect and dignity. As part of the learning from this story we will share it with the medical, nursing and the admin teams to reinforce the importance of being courteous to both patients and staff.

We also want to ensure that all our patients are kept safe and as you know we have had to comply with the regional regulations around face masks. If a patient arrives without a face mask the staff will ask them to put one on. However, for patients who are exempt we do find that a visible sign, such as a lanyard is helpful for our staff, as they do not have to ask the patient about not wearing a mask. Should you need to attend our department again, we would be happy to provide a clear visor for you.

I am pleased to read that you felt the doctor who did see you was kind and caring and helped to put you at ease

If you wish to receive any further clarification on this matter, I would be grateful if you could get in touch with me so that we can look into this in more detail

I do hope you are keeping well

Best wishes
