"Communication is so important"

About: Southern Health & Social Care Trust / Virtual Visiting Service

(as a carer),

Not being able to visit my dad has been extremely challenging. We understand why the Trust have put these restrictions on place but as a family find it really difficult to not be present when my dad needs us more than ever.

Virtual visiting has helped us keep connected. Being able to see dad and hear his voice has helped my 79 year old mum who has dementia. Today Nurse Victoria called me to say that my dad was feeling down and lonely. We had a visit scheduled for tonight but she was wondering if we would like to chat to my dad now. How thoughtful of Victoria. Today I felt reassured that my dad was in good hands and whilst we were not present his nurse could see what he needed and she connected us with him. Thank you for ensuring that my dad’s physical and psychological needs were met.

Communication at every level is so important to patients and families.

Dear Communication Matters, thank you so much for taking the time to share this feedback with us. We know it is very difficult for families at this time when they are unable to visit their loved one in hospital. We have established the virtual visiting service as a way for families to say connected with each other and I am so pleased that it is helping you in this way and also your Mum, when she hears your Dad's voice. I will pass on your feedback to the nursing staff, especially Nurse Victoria, who will be so pleased to receive these lovely comments and appreciation for the care they are providing for your Dad.

I hope your Dad is beginning to feel better

Best wishes

Mairead Casey
