"Terrible experience"

About: Saltash Health Centre

My mother was ill in January and was prescribed antibiotics, her condition then worsened significantly and she went back to see a doctor who immediately called an ambulance. In hospital they stopped the antibiotics she had been prescribed and gave her another type, she slowly started to regain her strength. She had a UTI 2 weeks ago and a doctor represcribed her the same antibiotics she was given in January. Again she had a severe reaction AF, high fever, sick, unable to walk. I am appalled that we as a family had to work out that my mother is allergic to that particular type of antibiotics prescribed and had the Dr looked properly through her notes they surely would have discovered this. My mother was in a terrible state and it was only through stopping taking the antibiotics she started to improve. I have spoken to the health centre 3 times on her behalf as my mother says she could never get through. There is a high density of elderly patients who need to use the surgery who don’t have access to the internet and who can only access the surgery by phone. Every time I phoned I was waiting for a minimum of 20 minutes to get through to someone. I can cope with this as I am persistent and determined! But an elderly person may just give up, when they really need to see a doctor, this absolutely unacceptable.
