"My husband suffered a fall"

About: King's Mill Hospital / Older people's healthcare Newark Hospital / General medicine Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Mental Health Services for Older People – Community (County)

(as a service user),

In April 2020 my husband suffered a fall, resulting in a broken arm. On return from having it plastered he had another fall, breaking his hip in two places - having to have a partial hip replacement. He spent the period of two months staying between Kings Mill + Newark hospitals and a care home. In between he was discharged home but each time his health deteriorated. He was undergoing tests for dementia. I was required to look after him after his final discharge from hospital.

I was not in good health myself and found caring for him and his difficult behaviour more challenging. Eventually I was put in touch with the IRIS team. I had an initial visit from Jane who was very understanding and arranged visits 3 times a week for my husband. This was extremely helpful as the team monitored his behaviour. Unfortunately in early hours 23rd July I had a fall and was taken to hospital with a broken bone in my neck and 2 in my back. At this stage the IRIS team arranged for 2 home visits 7 days a week to check my husband was coping and to help with his meds. This they continued even after I was discharged from hospital after 2 weeks. Gradually we agreed the visits were cut down. The IRIS team arranged for one of their mental health doctors to see him and after a lengthy visit we were assured by the doctor that my husband's clinical history does not support dementia but prolonged delirium. We were supported by the IRIS team for a week or so after and then felt that he didn't need any more visits I can't thank the team for all the support and friendliness we both had during this very difficult time and feel sure many families will feel the same. Thank you x
