"Trip to Hospital for a Colonoscopy"

About: Perth Royal Infirmary / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

I would just like to put on record my appreciation to all the staff at the Endoscopy department of Perth Royal Infirmary, where I recently underwent a Colonoscopy.

I must admit I was a little nervous at the thought of undergoing this procedure, as I have never spent any time in hospital previous to this. Basically this was fear of the unknown, but I decided that it was in my best interests to have this done so booked an appointment and took the first available date which was one morning in November, 2020. This was two weeks in the future, at the time of booking.

The day soon rolled around and I arrived five minutes early for my appointment. After a fairly short wait in the waiting room I was taken to have a cannula fitted to my left arm as I had agreed to have sedation. This was completely painless and needles don't bother me anyway. Then another wait in a second waiting room and then taken to the room where the colonoscopy was to take place. There was a short chat to the Consultant before the sedative was administered. The procedure itself went very smoothly and I could hardly feel anything as the colonoscope snaked its way around my colon. I just lay there on my trolley bed and watched this monitor side on as the colonoscope travelled up my intestines.

Then after what seemed like 20 or 30 minutes it was all over and the device was removed and I was wheeled to the recovery room. There was nothing seriously wrong with my colon so that was a relief and I was given a copy of the report. I was soon sitting up in bed and eating cheese and biscuits and drinking a cup of tea. These tasted amazing having not had anything to eat for 26 hours!

The Nurses in the recovery room were very friendly and even gave me a second round of cheese and biscuits as I had to wait for my friend to come pick me up. All in all the whole visit to Endoscopy was handled in a very professional manner and everyone was so helpful and friendly, I can't thank them enough.
