"I feel I have been let down"

About: General practices in Lothian St John's Hospital / Adult Mental Health St John's Hospital / Mental health

(as the patient),

I was in hospital about 6 weeks ago after attempting suicide for the 6th time due to me having BPD.

In hospital I spoke to a junior psychiatrist for about 30 minutes in-depth about how I feel and my medication. Everything was written down and we came to a plan on how I was to wean off my current medication and be started on a new medication. The doctor went to check all this with a senior psychiatrist that day and it was confirmed that this was the plan and the psychiatrist would work with my GP to switch over my meds and they made me a telephone appointment with a psychiatrist for over the phone for a few weeks after I left the hospital. (I would never have left hospital if I had known what was next to happen).

Psychiatrist then phoned me from St Johns saying I have to wean off my medication and I am getting no more medication at all for my condition. Manner was very rude, wouldn't let me speak, showed no compassion and kept saying my illness was bipolar not BPD, then hung up the phone on me. I have been left with no medications for my BPD, anxiety and depression and feel worse than ever. To top it off there is apparantly no recollection of my conversation with the junior psychiatrist when I was in hospital, I was told they would email my GP about the change of meds plan and it seems to have disappeared into thin air. I think they are trying to make me out like I am lying about it even though the other patients and nurses on the ward seen and heard the conversation.

It's an absolute disgrace, I feel that I've been lied to and treated like i dont matter and that I'm the liar. I would never have left that hospital if I had known that the plan in place wasn't going to happen as I am now on no medication and feel worse than ever.

I feel I have been let down severely by mental health at St John's and it's unacceptable as it's a danger to my life and others if they have done the same to them.

Dear Lolzxx,

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us via Care Opinion and I was sorry to hear about your experience and that you feel so let down. I have shared this with senior management from the service and we wonder if you would feel able to email us so that your concerns can be looked into.

Our email address is feedback@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk and we would need a little more information from you including your name, address and date of birth. If you would be so kind as to also make reference to your care opinion username that would be very helpful.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your feedback with us.

Best wishes,

Ann
