"Weekly Therapy for Anxiety and Depression"

(as the patient),

Weekly Therapy for Large Periods of Anxiety and Depression

I was referred to weekly therapy sessions through my GP as I had been going through very tough periods of anxiety attacks which on several occasions spiralled into depression. This situation was certainly not helped with the beginning of the Covid pandemic forcing us all to make considerable changes to our lives.

Thankfully these weekly sessions began via telephone and then eventually video calls within a very small space of time after the national lockdown was put into effect.

My therapist Monica was extremely welcoming and comforting; she set the introductory stage of the therapy out in such a way that I was able to express the issues which I had been facing without feeling ashamed or embarrassed. I must add that to date, I had never felt comfortable about talking about these particular issues to anyone else prior to this treatment beginning.

Eventually, after detailed discussions, we established that EMDR treatment may be the best course of action to take. The treatment involved exploring various aspects of my life, many of which dated back some years, and breaking them down into smaller segments. From there, the therapy involved focusing my eyesight on a light which slid along a side bar and in doing so this helped me to focus on various elements of these situations which were suspected to be cause of the anxiety. In many ways, following this light led to me experience what I can only describe as flashbacks which offered details that we could then address. Repeating this action several times for each situation during the sessions which we had together helped me to explain the issues I had experienced in great detail and this helped me to eventually heel the pain I was feeling from them, which eventually coached me into fully overcome these issues.

Now that I have completed the therapy, I certainly feel that these issues which I had experienced in the past, many of which were years ago, will no longer continue to haunt me. I have now learnt that life will always throw up awful periods which if not properly processed mentally can lead to serious mental illness in the future. I am now certain that with the help of this treatment, I will be able to deal with any problems which come my way and never feel as anxious or depressed about them as I once did.

I cannot thank my therapist Monica enough for all of her help during these sessions, especially during these difficult times. Before the sessions my anxiety held me back from experiencing the finer and more sociable parts of life. But now, I feel that I have regained my confidence which I had lost over the years due to such a horrible illness. I really hope that she will have the chance to read this, as I would like to say once again, thank you for all of your help, Monica, it will never be forgotten. You’re a true inspiration.

Dear MFCJ,

Thank you for not only sharing how you found therapy with Inclusion, but for also being so honest and detailed about what your therapy encompassed. I am sure this will really help others who may be unsure on what therapy sessions look like.

As you have mentioned, so many people have experienced a worsening in their mental health difficulties due to the Covid pandemic; you were certainly not alone. I am so pleased to hear that your therapy sessions came at the right time for you.

Monica will be especially pleased to read about how comfortable you felt opening up to her. Often, if we have been carrying around difficulties for a long time, it takes a huge amount of courage to begin to voice our issues, whether that it to someone who we are close with or with a professional.

It sounds as though EMDR was the right therapy option for you as it uncovered the cause of your anxiety and allowed you to heal from past experiences. EMDR (eye movement desensitization therapy) is a therapy that enables a person to process and overcome emotional distress that has resulted from life experiences. Thank you for sharing how you found it, as it is often a therapy which is new to a lot of people.

The techniques and information that you have learnt from your therapy are certainly things that you can take with you into your future. As you have rightly said, life will consist of awful periods for all of us, but it is about how we respond and deal with these periods that will make all of the difference. It sounds as though you are more than able to deal with any future situations that may come your way.

It is so lovely to read about how much you have gained from your therapy. I will be sure to let Monica know about your story.

We wish you the very best of luck for the future.

Kind regards,

Jade
