I attended the A & E Dept due to a tear in my retina. I waited four hours to be seen by an eye doctor despite my optician telling that I needed to be seen immediately. Family members said they would come and sit with me but there was nowhere for them to sit as it was so crowded. I was told to return the next day at 10.30 for laser treatment.

I wasn't seen by a doctor until 2.30pm and left the hospital at 4.15pm, patients had been waiting since 7.10am and were still in the clinic when I left.

It appeared that patients are all told to arrive at the same time for follow up treatment which meant that many patients sit and wait for hours.

I have only just been alerted to your your comment on NHS Choices, so please accept the delay in responding. I am sorry that you had to wait so long in our A&E department and again for your laser treatment. Nearly all patients who attend our specialist A&E are seen within four hours, with the majority waiting for much less time, but waits depend on the time of day and how busy our unit is. Everyone is prioritised according to the urgency of their treatment, with the most clinically urgent cases being seen first. We know that we have a problem with waits for surgery and are working to improve this. My apologies again that you had an unsatisfactory experience with us.
