"The lack of communication to home"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / General Medicine

(as a service user),

My husband's stay in D7 Dumfries and Galloway royal infirmary and the lack of communication to home

My husband has been in D7 Dumfries and Galloway for the last six weeks and although I am satisfied with his medical care I am very annoyed at the lack of communication.

He went there as an emergency and does not have a phone with him and has to rely on using their one and only phone on the ward to phone home or for me to phone and ask to speak to him and he tells me he can't get this phone sometimes waiting up to four hours to be able to call his wife.

More often he just doesn't get it at all after having been told by staff that he would get.   His wife has repeatedly tried to phone but is cut off or unable to get any answer and is often told that there is no phone but they will get it for him! after which does not happen.   He is 80yrs old and I don't think this is the correct way to treat him or his wife. A complaint  was made but appears to have been useless.

Dear Coppercurls,

Thank you for taking the time to make us aware of you and your husband’s experience whilst he has been a patient in Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

I am disappointed to hear that the communication from the ward team is less than satisfactory, particularly as you describe the medical care your husband has received has been satisfactory. I can understand how frustrating and disappointing this must be for you.

I note that you have previously contacted us to make a complaint and I would ask you to contact the Patient Experience Team to discuss your concerns further. Please drop us an email at dg.dgpatientexperience@nhs.scot and a member of the team will contact you to discuss further.

Kind regards

Michaela
