"Not seen a consultant or a doctor for anything"

About: The Longley Centre / Maple Ward

(as a service user),

Been an impatient for nearly a week and not seen a consultant or a doctor for anything and everyone that has come in after me has been seen and managed to get leave

I felt irritated as I was assessed several times to see if I was not well enough to go down on to a PQ ward unfortunately the ward managers ended up making a decision behind staff's back and behind my back without including me. They have put me on a one-to-one with out informing me and have not assessed me properly. I have not seen a consultant or a doctor to have leave and very frustrated as I feel trapped and not listened to.

Every time I asked staff for help I feel like they do not listen and do not take on board of what I am saying to them I am starting to get irritated as I don’t know how to manage my emotions and also how to complain when staff are busy and don’t really care and I’ve just had enough. I’d like this to go to the managers and get things sorted before things go wrong as I’m trying to get myself on the right path and I don’t want to go downhill when I’m trying to start again many thanks

Dear Omegkz86

I would like to thank you for sharing your story and I am sorry to hear about your experience on Maple ward.

It is a standard that all patients are seen by a ward doctor within 72 hours of admission and by the Consultant within the first week, preferably as soon as they possibly can. However on this occasion I am aware that you were seen by the ward Consultant 4 days after your admission.

Any decision to increase the level of observations that an individual requires is completed as part of a full MDT review. The team will always consider the least restrictive option based upon the risk that an individual presents with. This also includes any referrals that are made to a PICU environment. All decisions relating to your care must be discussed with you fully by a member of the team and it is clear from your notes that discussions were made regarding your observations and the care you required, at times you made helpful suggestions to maintain your own safety.

I understand that at times it can feel frustrating when you have been admitted to hospital, as you mention the ward is a busy environment and it can seem that the team are dealing with other issues when you feel that they should be seeing you. We are striving to ensure that we are using our time more effectively, whether this is using observations in a more therapeutic manner, allocating time for nursing staff to engage with you and reducing the time spent in meetings so that doctors can be seeing more of the patients that they care for.

Kind regards

Mark Walton
