"My thank you to Cgl"

About: Change Grow Live Cambridgeshire / Cambridge City

(as a service user),

Hi Guys,

I just wanted to send a message of thanks to everyone at Cgl who helped me get sober. It’ll be 6 months tomorrow since I started my recovery. This started with a random text from Gavin. I had had contact with inclusion as it was then when I came out of prison about 6 years ago. This was part of my licence but if i’m honest I only went because I had to. A few year later I did get in touch with Cgl voluntarily & met Gavin for one or two meeting. Again if I’m honest I wasn’t ready to  stop drinking or believe I could. I didn’t think that I could be helped so stopped contact with Cgl again.

I'd been drinking heavily for 30 years & prior to stopping I was drinking up to 5 bottles of wine a day. I had recently stopped taking cocaine which I believe was getting out of hand after 20 years of abusing that too. I truly believe at this point that I wouldn’t last another 6 months & had resigned myself to the fact that alcohol was going to kill me. I had over the previous 6 years taken an overdose, been hospitalised, been homeless on several occasions & lost 11 jobs. I had totally given up.

In April this year I was sat on the sofa drunk. It was mid morning when out of the blue I got a text from Gavin reminding me Cgl where still there & if I needed any support to get in touch. I sat for a while thinking about it & crying. I realised that I was at my lowest & I did need help otherwise things wouldn’t end well so I messaged Gavin back & said yes I think I do need some support.

Gavin got back to me soon after & we started my recovery process. We were in lockdown so it was all done over the phone. I was referred to Jan & put forward for a detox programme with Ellie. I had to wait two weeks to start but I did in May 2020 with medication & many phone calls from Jan & Gavin. After two weeks of meds I started zoom meeting with Ellie which I was initially really worried & reluctant to do but I was proved wrong as the meetings & support in my opinion with the huge support & patience from Jacky my partner saved my life. I want to say a massive thank from myself & my family to everyone at Cgl. I am now the happiest i’ve been in years & the healthiest. Everything in my life is now positive & going great.

I know it’s early days but I can hand on my heart say i’m confident the dark days are behind me & the future is so much brighter. I hope that in the future I can repay you all by maybe using my life experiences to help others.

From the bottom of my heart thank you!! You all had a part in saving my life.

Hi Ets

Firstly let me introduce myself. I’m the Service Manager for CGL in Cambridgeshire overseeing the service ensuring we do the best we possibly can to support service users.

Next, Id like to say a huge thank you. Receiving comments like these really does lift the team. Hearing about someone’s journey and how they have turned things around is so inspiring to us as a staff team as well as others who maybe in similar situation to yourself.

Also, well done! It you that has put in the hard work and committed to it. Its not easy, I’m sure you will agree. I am so proud of the staff team we have as they are so dedicated to helping people. One of your last comments was about coming back to get involved to support others. Yes of course. We have a Peer mentor and volunteer scheme and it would be amazing when the time is right for you to get involved.

Its amazing what can happen from one caring text. Ill pass this on to Gavin and the team.

Thanks again and of course keep going!

Paul
