"Please answer the phone"

About: Huddersfield Royal Infirmary

We have an elderly relative who is on ward 9 (acute ward). We are very concerned about him but it is almost impossible to enquire how he is because ward staff do not answer the phone or pick up the receiver and put it straight back down again. I understand they are extra busy with Covid-19 but everyone we talk to says this has been the case for years. Surely with no visiting allowed a bit of extra effort could be made to answer the phone. Or maybe set aside a period in the day for relatives to call.

Thanks for your review. We've shared your feedback with the matron, but did you know we have a dedicated Relatives' Line manned by nursing staff 7 days a week who you can call to see how your loved one is? I'm also not sure what number you called to get through as we've had to move some wards around at the moment to keep everyone as safe as possible.

The telephone number is 01484 355370 and the team work 07:30 – 19:30 seven days per week. They can also help arrange virtual visits. Thanks again for getting in touch.
