"Elderly mum refused at A&E"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

Took my elderly mum to A&E as she suffers from sciatic. The pain became unbearable and she couldn’t carry out basic tasks like putting on shoes and socks. Her balance was also affected. On arrival she was seen by a nurse who did a set of observations. A few minutes later came back to say a doctor would not be seeing her, and sent her away.

I went in and spoke to the doctor to explain how bad the pain was and they still refused to see my mum. On speaking to the doctor, I felt they were quite arrogant and said there was nothing that they were going to do and stated that my mum would not be seen in A&E that day.

I just think it is unacceptable to refuse care to an elderly person who is in extreme pain.
