"Child's epilepsy care"

About: Belfast City Hospital / Neurology The Ulster Hospital / Paediatric Outpatients The Ulster Hospital / Radiology

(as a parent/guardian),

Following onset of new seizures age 13 we have gone through diagnostic assessments and monitoring/ treatment reviews. Services have included MRI under radiology at Ulster Hospital, EEG evaluation at City Hospital  Paediatric outpatients at Ulster and Specialist Epilepsy Nurse Service in SEHSCT. Very impressed with all the staff we have encountered who have been empathetic, knowledgeable and professional and have continued to monitor despite COVID restrictions. Our only frustration resulted from how the different hospitals communicate in that the paper referral from one trust to another went missing in postal systems delaying diagnosis. I can't believe in this day and age that services need to rely on unreliable methods such as putting a piece of paper in the post when so many technology solutions are available which are much more efficient and reliable for transfer of information and making referrals. Knowing the benefits of the epilepsy specialist nurse I feel it would also be a real benefit to see them at the same clinic as the paediatrician at the point of diagnosis- we had many many questions but were very conscious of the numbers in the waiting room waiting to see the paediatrician. Access to the specialist nurse in addition would have given us more time with a professional to seek information and reassurance at a very stressful time. Thanks to all staff we have encountered in all departments mentioned.

Dear ServiceUser100

Thank you very much for telling your story of patient journey with epilepsy.

It's great to hear that staff have looked after you so well.

Your suggestion re: improved use of technology to replace unreliable manual processes will be looked into and options considered as to how we may make improvement.

The idea of having the specialist nurse and paediatrician at the same appointment and the benefits re: information and re-assurance will be given consideration as to how we may best proceed.

A follow up communication will be posted to describe how we plan to move forward.

Thanks again and best wishes

Conor

Dear ServiceUser 100

Many thanks for your positive comments on the paediatric epilepsy service.

I am pleased to say that since Jan 2021 we have been running weekly joint epilepsy clinics, where both the paediatrician and epilepsy nurse are present.

I appreciate that delays with paperwork are frustrating. I hope the planned implementation of Encompass will alleviate these delays
