"Worst opthalmology treatment experience I have…"

About: Bexhill Hospital

I was seen at Bexhill hospital opthalmology department after being referred by my GP. The reception staff, carers and all nursing staff were lovely but when I was seen by an opthamologist things changed dramatically for the worse. I am in a lot of pain and cannot hear very well and my physical symptoms are connected to my sight problems, when I tried to explain my symptoms I was shouted at and told that they were not interested in listening to my physical symptoms they just wanted to know about my eyes. I was sat next to an open window with traffic noise and there were people standing around outside so they may have been able to hear any information of my consultation which concerned me. As my hearing is affected at present the traffic noise prevented me from hearing the opthamologist clearly, they also had their back to me when talking to me which didn't help. I had to ask them to repeat what they had said several times to which they responded by tutting and talking to me in a very aggressive and abrupt tone. I told them I had my notes with me from recent opthalmology appointments which they were not interested in but then they complained that they couldn't find any notes for me on screen. I said that I am having headaches and eye pain and they tutted again and reluctantly looked in my eyes. My so called eye test consisted of the person waving a toy car in front of my eyes. I have never been so badly treated by anyone in the NHS before and I was in tears by the time I got back to my transport. I used to work for the NHS and my partner still does and we would never treat anyone in such a way. I realise there is so much pressure on the NHS at all times but there is no excuse for the way I was treated and the very poor dismissive attitude of this practitioner. This horrendous experience has left me feeling extremely upset. I was made to feel like a time waster and it has definitely made me not want to seek further treatment.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us some feedback about your recent experience of care in the Ophthalmology Department at Bexhill Hospital; whilst we appreciate your comments, we are very concerned and disappointed to read that your appointment did not run as you had hoped and you have been left feeling very upset with no confidence in any future care we can offer. Please accept our apologies for this as it is not how we want any patient to be treated or left to feel, and it indicates the Trust’s values of kindness, compassion, dignity and respect were not met on this occasion.

We would very much welcome the opportunity to hear more about your personal experience, and to have a discussion with you about how we could improve things in order to restore your faith in our ability to provide the care you need. It is also important that we help to ensure you are guided or advised on how to manage the headaches and eye pain you are encountering. If you feel able to, please get in touch with our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0300 131 5309 or drop them an email at esh-tr.palsh@nhs.net so we can be of help. Please be assured that raising a concern does not, nor should ever, affect the care and treatment you receive and should be considered as the helpful feedback you intend it to be.

In the meantime, we will share your comments with our Service Manager for Ophthalmology for her information. We also hope you are not in too much pain or discomfort, and are keeping as safe and as well as you can at this time. If the pain continues and you do not feel comfortable contacting PALS at this time, please speak to your GP or Optician to see if they can help you. Please take care.
