"PEG installation"

About: Royal Free Hospital / Neurology

(as a relative),

My mother has a slow progressive illness which causes her to experience swallowing difficulties. Over the years she'd been repeatedly advised that she should have a PEG fitted & avoid eating/drinking. She's been adamant that this wasn't something she wanted. The Royal Free Neurological Rehabilitation Centre repeatedly sent both a dietitian & a SALT to explain the dangers inherent in her continuing to try & eat/drink. The dietitian tried to suggest different menu options to help, but my mother wasn't keen on changing her lifestyle.

Finally, after she really started to struggle & her weight loss became accelerated, she decided that she'd have to go with the PEG. The dietitian managed to organise that the PEG was put in in the middle of Covid lockdown. She advised on the feeding regime & sorted out the regular supply of feed. My mother has since regained a stone that she'd lost & is doing much better. We're still in shock that it was all organised to happen while hospitals weren't open for this kind of procedure. We're incredibly grateful that it all went so smoothly.
