"Care in A&E"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Accident & Emergency Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as the patient),

I was taken by ambulance to A&E at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.

Due to suffering from an extreme flare up on pain, due to an existing spinal complaint.

The paramedics were extremely caring, friendly and professional.

The nurses and Dr who tended me were also  very, very kind, caring and professional.   I cannot give high enough praise for all they did for me, especially during these difficult times, with  Covid 19.

I would like to ask you to pass on my profound thanks and appreciation to them, although I will be sending a card to the A&E department also.

My only concern was being discharged by someone, who had neither treated me or reviewed my condition before doing so.

As I had been given Oral Morphine and Diazapam and also an anti inflammatory injection and still felt a little groggy. I am also very unsteady on my feet due to my condition.

I was alone, wearing only Pajamas and slippers, on a pouring wet and windy night at 3.30am, not able to phone family at that hour, I had to get a taxi back home to Arbroath. I would obviously not expect the hospital to provide or arrange transport for me, but the situation made me feel very apprehensive.

Anyhow. Thank you again, so very much to the A&E staff and paramedics who looked after me so very, very well. I am so very grateful and humbled.

Dear Grateful man,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback with us here on CareOpinion. I am very sorry to read about your flare up, back pain is something that I always thought looked so horrific on the patients I treated. I hope that you are feeling better?

Thank you for your kind words about the wonderful staff who attended you, acknowledging that this is a difficult time for everyone. I am really pleased that those mentioned, particularly our crews, cared for you in the manner you describe. I would be happy to make sure that this is passed on to them if you wish but I will require a little more detail to locate the incident and the crew. If you would be so kind as to email my team at sas.feedback@nhs.scot and provide the date, time and location that the vehicle attended you and of course your name that should allow us to locate the job. If you also wouldn't mind making reference to your CareOpinion username so that if someone else picks up the email they can easily link it to this post.

Thanks again for your time and I wish you all the best in your recovery

Kind Regards

Alan

Dear Grateful Man,

Thank you for providing feedback in relation to you recent visit to the Emergency Department (ED) at Ninewells Hospital. I am really pleased to hear that you found the staff to be kind, caring and professional. I will ensure that your positive comments are shared with the ED team. I however apologise that your discharge experience made you feel apprehensive, your described experience is not the level of care and support that the team strive to deliver. I will ensure that your discharge experience is shared with the team to support reflection, learning to avoid similar issues in the future.

Thanks again and best wishes with your recovery.

Thank you Sean for your reply and for passing on my appreciation to the wonderful nurses and Dr who looked after me so well.

With regard to my discharge experience. I did not catch the name or title of the gentleman, who discharged me. However I was surprised I was not reassessed before being sent home. The nurses appeared to be surprised too and were concerned for me, being able to get back home to Arbroath at that early hour.

Thank you again for your reply.

Thank you to all NHS staff for your great work, especially during these very difficult times.

Kind regards
