"Will we ever be smoke-free in our hospital grounds?"

About: Ormskirk & District General Hospital Southport & Formby District General Hospital

(as the patient),

I am tired of both patients and staff continuing to smoke in the grounds of Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals despite a "no smoking policy" being adopted 2 years ago.

Management say they have little power over this matter and BBC TV highlighted this several months ago but still the problem continues.

My daughter resides in Berkshire and if anyone is seen smoking in the grounds of her local hospital a message is relayed to them and they are ejected from the grounds of the hospital by Security Staff if the smoking continues.

I understand that a Merseyside Hospital operates a message system to smokers in their grounds.

Has anyone any suggestions to cut out this harmful habit and improve all our living standards?

Dear Daisy,

Thank you for taking the time to post your comment. Unfortunately, unlike the hospital in Berkshire we do not employ security staff at out hospitals. Because of this we are relient on the co-operation of staff, patients and visitors. However, we have recently increased the number of signs around all of the grounds to increase awareness and are working with our smoking cessation service to help those patients and staff who want to give up. All our staff are aware of the Smokefree Policy and any staff in breach of it are subject to the usual disciplinary procedures.

As you acknowledge it is very difficult to control such a large area as our hospital sites.
