"Dementia Care"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Ward 15

(as a relative),

I want to commend the dementia care - in particular the kindness and understanding provided by Terry, dementia assistant in ward 14 & 15 of the Ulster Hospital along with most of the nursing staff who have been almost uniformly courteous whilst dealing with very demanding and vulnerable persons.

There is always one in any organisation who cannot deign to answer a direct question from relatives or other colleagues - and they may have had good reason, but overall the support has been excellent, compassionate and wise with some - indeed most -  staff going out of their way to provide support.

As a side note it is sometimes hard to get through on the phone and get feedback, but that is understandable given the demands of the ward.

Dear pelicantf96

Thank you so much for sharing your experience of dementia care.

Our staff will really appreciate your kind words in recognition of how your relative was looked after.

We will remind staff of the importance of good quality communications.

We will consider how we might be able to improve phone arrangements to support ease of feedback.

Best wishes

Conor

Dear pelicantf96

I wanted to let you know about some changes we have put in place since you shared your feedback about it sometimes being hard to get through to the ward on phone.

We are introducing a Virtual Visiting Programme to connect patients, families and staff using Ipads. Facilitators here at the Trust will deliver each day’s programme of booked 20-minute visits and Schedulers will handle booking communications and will advise families re: connecting to the zoom calls easily.

We are currently in recruitment phase and have all ICT equipment and support arrangements secured. We are excited to launch this programme particularly given the current COVID visiting restrictions. Through this method, communication with families will be greatly improved. The programme will operate on a 7-day basis during 14:00 to 20:30. We anticipate the launch of the Virtual Visiting Programme for the first week of February.

Thank you again for taking the time to leave us feedback.

Best wishes,

Conor
