My daughter had been unwell, having been to out of hours we had been asked to go on to Daisy Hill Hospital. My 17wk old baby was having high temperatures, barely feeding (she was exclusively breastfed), barely wet nappies even when they were on for hours, 3-4 dirty nappies a day, extremely unsettled with no consoling her and a bit snuffly. We were took in promptly onto the PAWs ward where she was examined and monitored- all the staff were friendly & reassuring.
She was monitored majority of the day & then after being assessed again I was asked if I would prefer to be admitted onto the Paediatric ward or take her home with 24 Access straight back onto the ward should anything get worse or something change-ie. Rash, breathing changes.
I said I would take her home, but then dinner time the next day she came out in a rash on her forehead, scalp, all over her back & her front too.. I phoned the hospital and used the extension number they provided me with and back we went. Again, staff were friendly & thorough. They provided me with tea & toast & then provided me with dinner as I had been there majority of the day again with no sign of home.
We ended up staying over night for monitoring to be continued - they took bloods and put in an IV line just incase she needed antibiotics.
They changed the chair into a bed so I could try get some sleep when she was settled.
Each staff member was polite & helpful. Each nurse and Dr explained things thoroughly and if I wasn't sure, they repeated again with no issues. Each time they left or entered the room they sanitized their hands, changed their gloves & apron & all wore masks and PPE.
We got home the next evening but have to come back to the ward in 2 weeks to get her blood repeated to make sure her Neutrophils are returning to normal again.
I couldn't fault the staff in DHH, they have always been fantastic anytime we've needed to be there. Thank you for all your hard and tiring work. We really appreciate all you do, especially in these crazy times.
