"dental services"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Elderly Medicine (wards 3-7 & 36)

(as a carer),

My 92 year old dad, spent over 5 weeks, in the RAH, with pneumonia. The care he received from Ward 18, was great! However, they lost his dentures.

He has been out of hospital for about 5 weeks. He lost a lot of weight..we got called in twice, as they thought he was dying. Since he has been home, he is on a very restricted diet, because he has no teeth. He is also very embarrassed. He is not registered with a dentist, as he had his dentures for over 40 years. Now, we can't get anyone to help him. Why is there not a domicilliary service for elderly, vulnerable people, who have paid into NHS, for 60 years??? My 92 year old dad, who gave over 50yrs service to the NHS, expect him now, to try and find a dentist, and pay privately for teeth...after they were the ones to lose his teeth???? Come on...that is not right!

I also found out that there is no service for cutting elderly people's toenails either!! The NHS should be ashamed of themselves, for caring so little for our elderly population. I would very much like to speak to whoever made those decisions????

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to share your feedback. I am truly sorry for the additional distress caused by the loss of your Dad's dentures, which has clearly compounded an already difficult time for him and his family.

I have shared your kind comments about the care your Dad received in Ward 18 with the Ward team, which they really appreciated, but they have asked me to pass on their sincere apologies for the error which led to your Dad's dentures going missing and the significant impact this has had on his wellbeing.

I do hope that your Dad's dentistry and podiatry needs are met very soon.

With best wishes,

Linda

To be honest, that seemed like a lot of 'NHS speak', which actually said very little and offered no support!!

Dear Poppy333,

I think it would be helpful to speak with you directly about your father's dental needs. My colleague Tara Dunseith, Assistant Clinical Director, Oral Health would be happy to discuss the options available to best help your father at this time. You can contact Tara on 07966232085.

Regards

Raymond

Dear Poppy333

I have checked with my colleagues in Podiatry. They have advised that in 2013, the Scottish Government’s Personal Foot Care Guidelines were published, describing toe nail cutting as Personal Foot Care rather than podiatry care. In line with this national guidance, the NHSGG&C podiatry service policy means that individuals requiring personal foot care only and having no assessed requirement for specialist podiatry services are discharged from the service. by The Scottish Government have published resources to provide guidance on how to carry out personal foot care, either for oneself or for others. The resources are available at www.lookafteryourfeet.info We also have some information on our website: www.nhsggc.org.uk/your-health/health-services/podiatry/help-and-advice-with-your-footcare/

Kind Regards

Nicole

I'd like to say thank you, to the fab Assistant Clinical Director, Oral Health. I spoke to her today and she was very empathic, compassionate and helpful!!! Definitely, the kind of person, you want in management!! Someone, who puts the patient, first. She wanted to help my dad, which is what matters!! Thanks to Raymond too!

It's a pity, the podiatry service, was less helpful.:(

Thanks again to Tara:)
