"My gran of 84"

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Respiratory Medicine

(as a relative),

She has been in hospital for 7 weeks admitted with lung infection and fluid build up which has been resolved 4 weeks now and she is not having any medical input or any need to be in that ward G North. I and my family have been fighting to get my gran home for 5 weeks and they have been unhelpful, unreliable, not been contacting family with any updates. I have had to constantly phone daily to ask why she is still in the hospital.

My gran has had no visitors for 7 weeks and has been in tears on phone to me desperate to get home to her own house. She has COPD which is manageable and only requires some physio which can be done at home and I have had to contact social work, OT to get things in place for her at home for her needs. Inverclyde have done nothing but drag their heels make excuses and reluctantly helped with this - it's totally unacceptable to keep a lady in hospital when she doesn't need to be and there are people out there that need medical help and treatment.

Then yesterday she should have been taken home and they cancelled and today staff didn't have her ready and downstairs in time so ambulance had to leave her to pick up others and catch the ferry. So my 84 year gran is sitting in tears so upset and anxious for a second time and is now back on the ward.

I am absolutely disgusted and angry with how this whole situation has been handled and I am not just going to sit back and do nothing about it I am putting in complaints about this. I feel so sorry for anyone else who is having to deal with. I absolutely admire and have nothing but respect for ambulance staff and nhs staff having worked for the nhs myself but have got to say I'm so disappointed and upset with how my gran has been dealt with in Inverclyde royal hospital.

Dear ShanniD

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to share your feedback. This must have been a very worrying time for your family and especially difficult for your Gran when she was not able to have her loved ones to visit her in hospital, due to Covid-19 restrictions. I am so sorry for the additional distress your Gran and the family have been caused as a result of poor communication and a lack of information, I can fully appreciate your frustration in this regard.

It was particularly disappointing to read that you have found the attitude of staff to be unhelpful and lacking in compassion for your Gran's situation. Please be assured that this is not the patient centred approach to patient care that we aim for.

We would welcome the opportunity to look into your concerns further and if you feel this would be helpful, please feel free to contact me on 0141 314 6891 or by email lindarussell2@ggc.scot.nhs.uk.

With best wishes,

Linda
