"Someone to walk along with me"

For around 40 years I had, to greater and lesser extents, been emotionally dependent on alcohol to ease anxiety. To the outside world I functioned well, but inwardly I had begun to realise that this was gradually having an adverse effect on my health.
Reluctant to be "labelled", but recognizing I wasn't able to cut back alone, I took what was to me the incredibly brave step of approaching my GP and telling the truth about my alcohol intake. They referred me to Pathways to Recovery and this momentously marked the beginning of the end of my dependence.
The restrictions incurred by the pandemic meant contact with Pathways was by email or by phone but this actually suited my need for anonymity as I did feel ashamed of my inability to control this aspect of my life. From my first contact with the service, however, I was dealt with in a non-judgemental and compassionate way: I was supported kindly through the initial assessment and my regular catch-ups with my Key Worker offered me perspective, strategies and encouragement....and timely humour!
I do not underestimate the value of having had someone walking along with me on this path and now alcohol free and with a boosted self esteem, I have been able to be discharged from the service by mutual agreement. Thank you.
