"Flu immunisation service"

About: General Practices in Grampian

(as a parent/guardian),

My son has cerebral palsy - very high care needs 24/7 full care. We are normally seen together at the gp surgery for our flu jabs in one appointment the first week of Oct - my son, myself and my husband. We have now been given just one appointment for My son only. After trying for 2 days constantly pressing redial to get to the flu line helper, I’ve been told we don’t qualify. We are my son’s only carers - if we get ill he is at extreme risk. I’ve tried to get an appointment privately and they are all full for months. This flu vaccination is a yearly thing - you have had all year to sort this out. I don’t have the physical time to sit pressing redial for a cancellation on all the private chemists as I’m caring for my son. He is at the upper end of risk of the flu, so why aren’t families like mine helped first like a normal year?

Dear Exhausted Parent,

I’m really sorry accessing a fab jab has been so stressful for you this year. We acknowledge there have been issues and assure you we are trying our best to clear these.

I have attached a link to the NHS Grampian flu website:

https://www.fluvaxgrampian.com/eligible-groups/

- which would indicate that you and your husband, as main carers for your son, are eligible for a vaccination. I know you have had problems with contacting the flu line previously but from today there are extra phone lines in operation and I would suggest getting in touch again as they will be best placed to give advice about clinics in your local area.

If you are still having a problem getting in touch with the flu line please contact me by email: kirsten.dickson@nhs.scot

Kirsten
